PWRDF Announces More Funds for South Sudan Relief

April 7, 2014
By Simon Chambers
As the situation for civilians in South Sudan continues to worsen, PWRDF has sent new grants for relief work in Darfur and within South Sudan itself. Over a million people have fled their homes in the wake of violence in the world’s newest country, finding themselves as internally displaced people within South Sudan or as refugees in the surrounding countries.
PWRDF has contributed $35,000 through the ACT Alliance for continuing relief work in Darfur. 2014 marks ten years since the ACT Darfur Programme was initiated, but the impacts of the conflict continue to affect civilian populations in the region. The ACT program will help over 586,000 people to have access to food, clean water, sanitation, improved health, education for children, and jobs for adults.
The fighting in South Sudan, which began in Juba in December 2013 and spread to other regions of the country, continues sporadically despite a cessation of hostilities signed in January. This has led to almost a million people being displaced. PWRDF has contributed $20,000 to ACT’s program that will provide food and basic goods (cooking tools, bedding, clothes, etc) to three thousand households who have fled the violence.
These funds are in addition to the $20,000 that PWRDF announced in January to provide relief to newly arrived refugees at the Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya, bringing the total PWRDF contribution to $75,000. The Anglican Alliance for Development, Relief and Advocacy has facilitated regular humanitarian teleconferences among donor agencies and the Episcopal Church of Sudan and South Sudan to keep up-to-date on the current situation.
