Alongside Hope Development Project
The South Okanagan Similkameen Métis Association is addressing the critical issue of legal recognition for Métis and Non-Status individuals in their communities. This issue arises from historical and colonial displacement, which has led to a lack of knowledge about family origins among many individuals. The suppression of family information, sealed adoption records, and lost documentation contribute to the difficulty people face in understanding their Indigenous heritage. Establishing a clear family tree is a necessary step for applying for government recognition.
